Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) Installation
 Project Description

Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) and pedestrian pushbuttons are integrated devices that communicate information about the WALK and DON'T WALK intervals at signalized intersections in non-visual formats (i.e., audible tones and vibro-tactile surfaces) to pedestrians with impaired vision.

All APS enhanced intersections included in this project are programmed with audible capability informing the pedestrian of which street they are crossing along with an audible countdown providing the time remaining left in the crosswalk.  Each APS installed has a braille plate over the pedestrian pushbutton which provides which street the button is for.  Lastly, in the event of an emergency, if pre-emption is activated by emergency vehicles, the entire intersection audibly announces/alerts that all pedestrians stay on the corners as the emergency vehicles pass through the intersection.
