Pavement Management Program Strategies

The City maintains publicly owned streets through various strategies:
  
  • Routine Maintenance
    • Weekly street sweeping
    • Pot hole repair as discovered or reported
    • Crack sealing to prevent water from penetrating the street into the sub grade

  • Extraordinary Maintenance
    • Installation of sub-drains where necessary
    • Slurry sealing residential streets every 7 years based on available funds
    • Overlaying residential streets with a 2” thick new asphalt layer – Every 20 to 25 years
    • Reconstruction – Removal of the asphalt and sub-grade material and reconstruction with new aggregate base and asphalt – When necessary
    • Arterial streets are repaved with new asphalt every 10 to 20 years depending on conditions

Current Paving Activities


FY 16-17 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, Cash Contract No. 16-04

Description:

The project will resurface approximately 0.8 mile of residential streets in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood, 3.0 miles of non-residential collector streets, and 2.1 mile of non-residential arterial streets, reconstruct access ramps at most intersections and construct bus pads along collector and arterial streets. The resurfacing of the streets consists of the grinding and removal of portions of the existing roadway pavement, placement of an interlayer of aggregate for the entire roadway width, followed by placement of a rubberized asphalt pavement overlay over the entire roadway width.

Order of Work:

  • Installation of wheelchair access ramps during the months of November 2016 through January 2017
  • Pavement grinding and placement of an asphalt pavement overlay over the entire width of street during the months of February/March 2017
  • Adjustment of manholes and valves to new pavement grade during the month of March 2017
  • Replacement of roadway striping during the months of February/March 2017

Schedule:

The project overall work will start on November 1, 2016.  The roadway paving activities will not start until April 2017.  The overall project completion is scheduled for June 2017.

Construction Impacts:

  • On-street parking will not be allowed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. where and when “NO PARKING” signs are posted
  • On-street driving and parking will not be allowed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. where and when “NO PARKING OR DRIVING” signs are posted
  • Please place your trash bins out the night before your scheduled trash pickup date to allow for early pickup prior to start of the construction work
  • Uneven pavement, loose gravel and dust are part of the construction work; however, the contractor will periodically sweep the street
  • Construction equipment and materials may be stored temporarily on the streets
  • At all times, access to your street and driveway will be provided at the end of each construction day – 5:00 p.m.
  • Please expect delays and allow time for getting through the construction area
