Mayor's Message - May 2017; Plan Your Laguna Niguel Summer Staycation!

It is hard to believe that summer is already here. Where has the year gone so far? It seems it was Presidents Day then Mother’s Day just yesterday. Now we are quickly getting ready to celebrate our Dads and Grads without so much as a skip of a beat.  The summer season officially kicks-off this weekend as we celebrate Memorial Day.  With all the festivities such as BBQs, pool and beach parties that will fill your holiday weekend, please take time to remember our Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Just as we do every summer, Laguna Niguel has a great line up of fantastic community events planned to provide days packed with activities and fun for all ages.  For all the music lovers, our free summer concert series “Dancing through the Decades,” will kick-off on Friday, June 9 with the 50’s & 60’s cover band Tommy Tassi & The Authentics.  Grab a blanket, some chairs and prepare to rock around the clock at the amphitheater in Crown Valley Park.  With construction almost over it is a great idea to take advantage of the free shuttle service available from City Hall.

Our Parks & Recreation Department has created a lineup of exciting camps to keep your kids active all day long.  Star Wars, Harry Potter, Hunger Games and Zombie Survival Camps are just a few of the themes that are planned.  Sign them up now before they are sold out.  Stay cool and fit at our community pool and Sprayground at Crown Valley Park.  Want to burn off some energy? Check out the summer camp program at the Laguna Niguel Skate Park.  Perfect for those that know how to do a goofy-footed heel-slide or 50-50 grind.

Nature lovers can explore our beautiful Niguel Botanical Preserve, featuring exotic plants from around the world.  Also available are approximately 80 miles of scenic trails throughout our beautiful Planned Community that is half open space.  Many of these trails provide direct access to City parks and scenic areas with amazing ocean and valley views.

The Sea Country Senior and Community Center has their afternoon concert series starting June 15th.  For the Lawrence Welk lovers - the Live Ballroom Dance Show on June 22nd will be a huge hit.  For a different kind of exploration, one of mind expansion, take a trip to the Laguna Niguel Public Library, where you can participate in one of their many summer reading programs, summer computer science classes or story-time for your toddlers.  Update your Library Card to show you are a Laguna Niguel resident.  We need the local credit to keep the Library doors open seven days a week.

Of course, the biggest event of the summer is our annual Fourth of July Celebration!  Start your morning off at the Laguna Niguel Family YMCA’s 39th Annual Run in the Parks. It’s a 5k run/walk event for the whole family. For a quick bite after, join your friends and neighbors at the 35th Annual Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce Pancake Breakfast at the same venue.  Spend the afternoon in the Crown Valley Pool which is free and open to the public on the 4th.  That evening enjoy another of our free concerts in the amphitheater.  Finish the day with our fabulous Fireworks Spectacular! Held over Laguna Niguel Lake, you won’t want to miss this beautiful and spirited display of our nation’s independence and liberty. You can park and walk to and from Crown Valley Park and make a whole day of it!

Whatever you do, I wish you and your family a safe and wonderful summer season and encourage you to explore and enjoy all Laguna Niguel has to offer! If you have questions about any of our programs or want to hear what else we offer, please contact our Parks & Recreation Department at (949) 425-5100 or go to www.cityoflagunaniguel.org.  I hope to see you around our beautiful City!
